I’ve seen the race results of the 2007 Hoylake 10k and my exploits placed me in the top percentile - the fastest 25% of the participants. Personally, I think that sounds much more impressive than saying that I was actually 92nd out of 500+ and finishing some 11 minutes behind the first man home.
It is taking part that counts of course and top effort to all who ran in that wind.
Well, I kept my options open and made the decision that I’d decide on the morning if I wanted to run the 2007 Hoylake 10k. Walked round to the Community Centre at 9ish and watched the flags blowing in the strong wind - so I knew it would hard back. Decided to enter if only to stop myself wondering what I would have done had I not entered.
It’s a straight out and back route, starting on the prom at the end of Hoyle Road and straight out to a bit past Leasowe Lighthouse (ala seaside run). Turn around and retrace. Some bridal path, some bumpy track behind the embankment and some pavement.
Good turnout today with I guess around 400 hundred taking part - including my sister and her work colleagues. Local MP Stephen Hesford was the celebrity starter!
A wind assisted 5km in about 21.15 and then a slog back to the finish into a really strong headwind - it doesn’t help being my size …I’m like a headwind magnet. Bloody hard wind, no wonder Hoylake is the this years venue for the European Sand Yachting championship (starts tomorrow).
Finished with a time of 45:41, giving me an average of over 13kph. Ave heart rate of 176 indicates I tried hard, but to be honest don’t think I battled hard enough into the wind. Last 2km were very much a graft!
£6 entry fee supports a local children’s charity and you get the tshirt and a certificate (kids like it). Not sure why there’s a Simpsons look-a-like on the tshirt, but it reminds me that I’m due a Duffs equivalent.
